UPDATE: Blaze at Chalong Pier Losses Top 40 Million Baht

Phuket –

Authorities in Phuket moved quickly to contain a massive fire that broke out at Chalong Pier in the early hours of Monday morning, preventing what could have been a devastating blow to the island’s tourism industry. The blaze damaged 24 speedboats, with estimated losses of around 40 million baht, but officials say the coordinated response helped avert far greater destruction.

Our previous stories:

A massive fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday (January 7th) at Chalong Pier in Phuket, destroying at least 23 speedboats and causing widespread alarm among local residents.

Phuket authorities mounted an emergency response early this morning after a massive fire broke out at Chalong Pier, destroying more than 20 speedboats and prompting swift intervention from provincial leaders.

Now for the update:

At a briefing later that morning at Phuket Smart Pier, Governor Narit Pongsittithavorn commended all agencies for their teamwork and decisive action. “If the fire had not been contained in time, it could have spread to hundreds of boats and caused catastrophic damage,” he said. The governor ordered immediate relief measures for affected operators and added that the pier remains safe and operational following inspections by the Marine Department.

Governor Narit directed local authorities to clear debris, oil residue, and wreckage from the water within 24 hours to minimize environmental impact. The Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) set up a service point at the pier to assist boat owners with claims, while provincial officials established a one-stop coordination center for operators and residents.

Phuket’s public relations office was tasked with providing accurate information to reduce public anxiety and reassure tourists. “Chalong Pier remains open and safe,” the governor confirmed, showing the province’s commitment to maintaining confidence in its tourism sector.

Provincial leaders, including deputy governors and district officials, have been assigned to meet directly with affected operators to discuss further assistance. The governor expressed gratitude to all agencies for their sacrifice and efficiency, and offered encouragement to business owners facing losses. “We will overcome this crisis together,” he said.
