Thailand Sets Referendum on New Constitution for February 8th, Coinciding with General Election

Bangkok, January 2nd, 2026 – Thailand will hold a nationwide referendum on whether to draft a new constitution on February 8th, 2026, the same day as the upcoming general election, according to an official announcement published in the Royal Gazette.

The notice from the Prime Minister’s Office, signed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, formally designates Sunday, February 8th, as the date for the referendum. Voters will be asked a single question: whether they agree that Thailand should have a new constitution to replace the current charter.

The decision allows the referendum to proceed alongside the snap general election, which was triggered by the dissolution of parliament last month. Officials say combining the two events is expected to increase voter turnout and make more efficient use of resources.

The referendum stems from ongoing debates over constitutional reform, with calls for changes to the 2017 charter that was drafted under military influence. Prime Minister Anutin’s administration has moved forward with the vote as part of broader political agreements.

Election preparations are already underway, with advance voting scheduled for February 1st and registration for early ballots closing soon. On election day, eligible voters will receive separate ballots for the general election and the referendum.

Political analysts anticipate high interest in both contests, as they could shape Thailand’s governance and stability in the coming years. For non voters, TPN Media notes that the weekend of February 8th shall see a national alcohol sales ban from the evening of February 7th to the evening of February 8th until polls close, per Thai election law. This will also mean entertainment venues shall close on the evening of Saturday, February 7th.
