A new transport alternative to ease traffic congestion in Thailand’s premier island destination
Phuket –
Phuket authorities have launched a pilot test of a Boat Taxi service connecting Phuket International Airport with Patong Beach, in a bid to tackle chronic traffic congestion and enhance transport options for tourists and residents alike.
The initiative, overseen by Vice Governor Teerapong Chuaychu, is part of a broader project to integrate waterborne transport into the island’s mobility network. The test run brought together officials from the Marine Department, Sirinat National Park, Patong Municipality, the Phuket Provincial Industry Council, Phuket City Development Co., as well as representatives from the airport, fisheries, and private sector.

The inspection began at the airport’s check-in area before moving to a temporary pier site at Sirinat National Park. From there, officials boarded boats to survey the route to Patong Beach, one of Phuket’s busiest tourist hubs. Upon arrival, the delegation continued by bus to assess facilities for shuttle services linking hotels and the pier.
Vice Governor Teerapong explained that the trial examined multiple dimensions:
- Travel time efficiency between airport and Patong
- Passenger and luggage capacity of vessels
- Safety standards for tourists and operators
- Potential environmental and social impacts
“The results will guide future decisions on whether the Boat Taxi can be implemented as a permanent service,” he said.
Adul Rueklamoon, Director of the Phuket Marine Office, confirmed that boats and piers are ready for pilot operations, noting that the project aligns with Ministry of Transport policy and could expand in phases.

Lalita Maneesri, Mayor of Patong, emphasized the importance of easing traffic during peak tourist seasons. “Boat Taxi offers a practical alternative that will improve convenience for visitors and help relieve congestion,” she said.
If adopted, the Boat Taxi system is expected to:
- Cut travel time between the airport and Patong
- Reduce the number of vehicles on major roads
- Allow local taxi operators to integrate with the service
- Strengthen Phuket’s transport infrastructure and elevate the tourist experience

The pilot marks a strategic step in Phuket’s transport modernization, reflecting efforts to balance tourism growth with sustainable urban management. By linking the airport directly to one of the island’s busiest beaches, the project could redefine how visitors move across Phuket, while easing pressure on its overburdened road network.
