Cambodia Signals Readiness for Ceasefire Talks with Thailand

Bangkok, December 24th, 2025 – Cambodia has formally expressed its willingness to negotiate a ceasefire with Thailand, sending an official letter from its Ministry of Defence to Thai counterparts on December 22nd, amid ongoing border clashes.

The move paves the way for secretary-level discussions under the bilateral General Border Committee (GBC), scheduled from December 24–27 in Chanthaburi province, Thailand. Thai sources indicate that a successful outcome could lead to a joint agreement between the two countries’ defence ministers on December 27th.

Thailand has expressed the need for Cambodia to demonstrate sincerity through concrete actions, including prior declaration of a ceasefire, cessation of force, and cooperation on demining of land mines.

The development follows a special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting and comes as renewed fighting since early December has claimed dozens of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands on both sides, shattering a previous truce.

Reports from Thai media highlight cautious optimism, with military officials stressing verifiable implementation for any lasting peace.
