Sacred Procession Unites Phuket in Reverence During Vegetarian Festival

Phuket –
On the eighth day of Phuket’s annual Vegetarian Festival, the island witnessed one of its most revered rituals: the “Iew Keng” procession, led by the historic Kathu Shrine—known locally as “Aam Nai Too Tao Bo Keng.” This sacred event, held on October 28, marked a spiritual journey through the heart of Phuket, culminating at the tip of Saphan Hin where incense and candle smoke were ceremonially gathered and returned to the shrine.

The procession, steeped in tradition and spiritual symbolism, honors the visit of the deity Kiu Ong Tai Te, believed to bestow blessings and prosperity upon the community. Devotees lined the streets as the shrine’s palanquins—both the smaller “Chai Pia” and the grand “Tua Lian”—carried the deity through the city. Locals respectfully set up altars outside their homes and stood in silence as the procession passed, receiving divine blessings.

This year’s event was marked by solemnity and deep faith. Male and female spirit mediums, known as “Ma Song,” led the procession, performing rituals believed to absorb misfortune on behalf of the community. The route began in Kathu town and continued through central Phuket, drawing crowds of residents and tourists alike. Businesses and households along the way offered floral tributes and lit incense, creating a corridor of devotion on both sides of the road.

In light of national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, organizers adjusted the festivities to reflect a more subdued tone. All participating shrines agreed to reduce celebratory elements, lower sound levels, and encourage the use of symbolic rather than elaborate weaponry among Ma Song participants.

Tomorrow, October 29th, marks the final day of the festival. The closing Iew Keng procession will be hosted by the Lor Rong Shrine (Sui Boon Tong), beginning at 7:30 AM. As the festival draws to a close, Phuket continues to honor its rich cultural heritage with reverence, unity, and spiritual devotion.
