Phuket — A foreign tourist caused a public disturbance in Patong on Tuesday (September 23rd), drawing widespread attention after walking unclothed through a busy street and allegedly assaulting a police officer attempting to intervene.
The incident, captured in a viral video, unfolded along a bustling stretch of shops and restaurants frequented by both locals and international visitors. The man, visibly agitated and unclothed, was seen shouting at passersby and confronting motorists, bringing concern and confusion among onlookers.
Efforts to de-escalate the situation were made by several traffic police officers and fellow foreigners, but the man reportedly resisted all attempts to calm him. He even allegedly tried to strangle one of the officers during the struggle, leading to a disturbing scene that was partially recorded by witnesses.
A Thai motorist who stepped in to assist described the moment as “alarming and surreal,” while background audio from the video captured both shock and laughter from bystanders. The man was eventually subdued and handcuffed by police.
The incident has sparked debate online, with some commenters expressing concern over Thailand’s visa-free entry policies and their potential link to declining tourist behavior. Others dismissed the episode as an isolated case, urging restraint in drawing broader conclusions.
Authorities have yet to release details regarding the man’s identity, motives, or mental state. However, under Section 388 of Thailand’s Criminal Code, public indecency may result in a fine of up to 5,000 baht and deportation for foreigners.
