Phuket-
A massive traffic collision involving 15 vehicles erupted inside the Darasamut Underpass in Wichit around midday today, after an 18-wheeler truck carrying concrete piles suffered a brake failure while descending into the tunnel.
The Wichit Police told the Phuket Express that the incident occurred on Chalermprakiat R.9 Road in Wichit, causing severe congestion in both lanes of the underpass and prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement and traffic control officers.

According to preliminary findings, the truck had departed from Ranong and was en route to deliver its load to Nai Harn Beach in Rawai. As the vehicle entered the sloped tunnel, its brakes reportedly malfunctioned.

The driver attempted to slow the truck by steering into concrete barriers and tunnel walls, but the steep gradient propelled the vehicle forward, resulting in a high-impact collision with multiple cars ahead and at least one vehicle traveling in the opposite lane.

One person sustained chest pain and was transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital. No fatalities were reported. Authorities took over an hour to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow through the underpass.

Police from Wichit Station arrived swiftly at the scene to manage traffic and begin an investigation. The truck driver has been detained for questioning and may face legal charges pending further inquiry.

The Darasamut Underpass, a key artery near Central Festival Phuket, has long been a site of concern due to its steep incline and heavy traffic. Today’s incident has reignited calls for stricter safety inspections of heavy vehicles and improved infrastructure safeguards in high-risk zones.
