Chinese Fugitive Wanted for Embezzlement Arrested in Phuket After 272-Day Overstay

PHUKET —

Immigration officers in Phuket have arrested a 37-year-old Chinese national wanted on an international warrant for embezzling tens of millions of yuan in public funds.

Phuket Immigration told the Phuket Express that the suspect, identified as Mr. Peng, was apprehended at a Chinese restaurant in Wichit on September 17th. The arrest followed a formal request from Chinese authorities, who alerted Thai officials that Mr. Peng had fled to Thailand to evade prosecution.

Investigators tracked him to a residence in Phuket and later confirmed he would be dining at a local Chinese restaurant. Officers discreetly monitored the location before moving in to arrest him.

Immigration records revealed that Mr. Peng had overstayed his visa by 272 days. He was charged with violating immigration laws and is now in custody pending further legal proceedings. Authorities are coordinating with the Chinese embassy to facilitate extradition.
