Landslide Prompts Emergency Closure at Koh Sirey Temple in Phuket

Phuket—

Authorities in Phuket have declared the area surrounding the revered Phra That In Kwaen replica at the Koh Sirey Temple a controlled zone following a series of landslides that pose serious safety risks.

The Rassada Municipality told the Phuket Express. The incident occurred within the temple grounds on Koh Sirey, a small island connected to Phuket’s mainland. The landslide, which began earlier this week, has continued to destabilize the hillside near the golden rock replica—a sacred structure modeled.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat has ordered the local incident commander to enforce a strict perimeter around the site. Entry is now prohibited to all visitors, including tourists and worshippers, until further notice. The decision aims to prevent injuries and allow for a thorough safety assessment.

The Phuket Office of Public Works and Town Planning has been tasked with conducting an immediate geological survey of the affected area. Engineers and safety officials will evaluate the slope’s stability and determine appropriate mitigation steps. Meanwhile, local authorities have been instructed to monitor surrounding zones closely for signs of further erosion.

The Koh Sirey Temple, known for its tranquil atmosphere and panoramic views of the Andaman coast, is a cherished spiritual site for both locals and the Mon community. The temple’s golden rock replica, perched precariously on the hillside, has long drawn visitors seeking blessings and scenic vistas.

Recent heavy rains are believed to have triggered the landslide, exacerbating the vulnerability of the temple’s hillside terrain. Officials have urged residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant and report any signs of ground movement.
