Phuket Shines on the Global Stage as Host of the 2025 Women’s Volleyball World Championship. A Week of Sporting Excellence Sparks Joy and Economic Growth.
Phuket has once again proven its prowess as a world-class destination—not just for tourism, but for international sports—after successfully hosting the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship. Held from August 22 to 27 at the 4,000-seat Saphan Hin Gymnasium, the tournament drew capacity crowds to every match, creating an atmosphere that rippled across the island.
Spectators from across Thailand and abroad flocked to the venue, with fans traveling from neighboring provinces such as Phang Nga and Krabi to witness the action. The influx of visitors translated into a boost for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, transport services, and retail outlets.
Mr. Thammawat Wongcharoenyot, board member of the Sports Authority of Thailand and President of the Phuket Sports Association, hailed the event as a milestone for the province. “Being entrusted by the FIVB to host this championship is a tremendous honor,” he said. “It reflects Phuket’s growing reputation and capability to stage events of global significance.”
He also said that the tournament not only brought joy to residents and visitors alike but also served as a powerful catalyst for the local economy. “The energy and excitement extended far beyond the stadium. It was a week where sports and tourism came together to uplift the entire community.”
Mr. Thammawat also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Sports Authority of Thailand, Phuket’s provincial government, law enforcement, and local administrative bodies for their seamless coordination and support, which ensured the event ran smoothly and safely.
Looking ahead, Phuket is poised to continue its role as a premier host for international sporting events. While future tournaments may not always be world championships, Mr. Thammawat affirmed the province’s commitment to attracting major leagues and competitions. “Our goal is to keep sports at the heart of Phuket’s identity—not only to entertain, but to enhance our image as a dynamic, welcoming destination.”
With its successful hosting of the 2025 championship, Phuket has taken another confident step toward becoming Thailand’s leading “sports city,” where athletic excellence and tourism development go hand in hand.
