Phuket –
A group of foreign tourists physically assaulted lifeguards at Nai Harn Beach in Phuket after being warned not to enter the water during a red flag safety closure. The incident, which occurred on August 18th around 6:00 PM and later went viral on social media from a witness, has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of beach safety regulations.
The video clip of the incident was shared by the Newshawk Phuket local news page, showing the tourists ignoring the beach’s closure and entering the water after hours, despite red flags clearly indicating dangerous conditions. When lifeguards approached to issue a warning, the group responded aggressively—spitting at and punching the officers. A video clip taken by a witness of the altercation, lasting 2 minutes and 18 seconds, was then widely shared on social media.
The lifeguards, stationed at Nai Harn Beach in Rawai subdistrict, immediately contacted local police to file a formal complaint. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident.

“This beach is under strict surveillance,” one lifeguard said. “We’ve worked hard to maintain zero fatalities this year. That gives us the strength to keep doing our job.”
Online reactions have been swift and critical. Many users condemned the tourists’ behavior as disrespectful and unacceptable, praising the lifeguards for their professionalism and urging legal action.
Local officials added that lifeguards are deployed to protect both residents and visitors, and called on all beachgoers to respect safety protocols. “This beach should be a place of happiness—not tragedy,” one official stated.
The incident has reignited discussions about tourist conduct and the importance of upholding local regulations, especially in high-risk environments like coastal areas during monsoon season.
It’s unclear if the tourists are still in Thailand or if they will face legal accountability. Their nationality was also not made available.
