Thalang –
A Russian man went missing, and later was sadly found deceased, after reportedly pushing his girlfriend to safety before being swept away by strong waves off the coast of Phuket in the early hours of Thursday morning (August 21st).
The Sakoo Police told the Phuket Express that they received an emergency call around midnight reporting a drowning incident near a hotel beach located between Banana Beach and Nai Thon Beach. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.
According to police reports, the Russian man, identified as Mr. Denis, 35, had entered the water with his girlfriend, Ms. Kamil, 24, also a Russian national, around 12:30 a.m. While swimming, the couple was struck by a powerful wave.
In a final act of bravery, Mr. Denis reportedly pushed Ms. Kamil toward the shore, allowing her to reach safety, before he himself was pulled under by the current.
Ms. Kamil, visibly shaken, explained the moment to investigators, stating that the sea conditions had appeared deceptively calm before the wave hit. She was unable to locate Mr. Denis after surfacing and immediately called for help.
On Thursday afternoon at 3:00 P.M., the body of the missing Russian was found not far from where he was last seen.
The incident has prompted renewed calls for increased safety measures and public awareness regarding the dangers of swimming in unmonitored areas after dark.
