Arab Tourists Allegedly Assault Phuket Motorbike Rental Owner Over Damage Dispute, Tourists File Counter Assault Complaint

Phuket-

Authorities in Phuket are investigating a violent altercation involving a group of Arab tourists and a local motorbike rental shop owner in Patong, following a dispute over damage fees.

The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has raised concerns about tourist behavior and its impact on Thailand’s image abroad.

The Patong Police told the Phuket Express that on the evening of August 10th, around 9:00 PM, a group of Arab tourists visited a motorbike rental shop located in Patong Center Alley on Phra Metta Road. During a test ride, one of the tourists crashed a high-powered Honda X-ADV 750cc motorcycle, causing significant damage.

The shop owner demanded compensation of 50,000 baht (approximately $1,400 USD), citing the extent of the damage. However, the tourists reportedly refused to pay the full amount, offering only 10,000–20,000 baht and claiming there was no formal rental agreement. The disagreement escalated into a heated argument, culminating in physical violence when one of the tourists called in several friends to intervene.

Initial reports suggested that up to 20 individuals were involved, but police have confirmed that only six tourists participated in the assault. Four suspects have been apprehended, while the primary aggressor remains at large, believed to be hiding in the Bangla Road area.

All suspects face charges of “joint assault,” and authorities have temporarily blocked their departure from Thailand pending medical evaluations and further investigation. Interestingly, the tourists have also filed a counter-complaint, alleging that they were assaulted during the altercation.

The family of the injured shop owner has expressed frustration with the investigation process, alleging that some officers may be biased in favor of the tourists. They claim to have been intimidated during the identification process and fear that justice may not be served.
