Phuket –
Thai immigration authorities have arrested a 27-year-old Russian national believed to be the leader of an international arms trafficking ring. The suspect was apprehended in Phuket after fleeing criminal charges in Bangkok related to illegal firearm possession.
Phuket Immigration told the Phuket Express that the arrest was carried out by the Phuket Immigration Police on August 13th, following a warrant issued by the Phra Khanong Criminal Court in Bangkok on July 31st.
The suspect had previously been detained in connection with illegal weapons possession but managed to escape during the investigation. Intelligence gathered by law enforcement indicated that he had taken refuge in Phuket.
Authorities devised a plan to lure the suspect into reporting to the immigration office. Upon his arrival, officers presented the arrest warrant and took him into custody without incident.
During initial questioning, the suspect denied all allegations. Nevertheless, he has been handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings. Thai officials are also coordinating with the Russian Embassy to manage the diplomatic aspects of the case.
