KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – On July 27th, 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on the Thai government to de-escalate tensions and agree to a ceasefire with Cambodia over their ongoing border dispute. Rubio expressed the United States’ willingness to facilitate diplomatic talks to preserve peace between the two Southeast Asian nations.
The appeal comes ahead of a critical meeting scheduled for Monday in Malaysia between Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet as we previously posted here. The talks, hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN Chair, aim to address the escalating conflict that has strained relations between the two countries.

Tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border have persisted for four days, with clashes continuing despite earlier efforts by US President Donald Trump to halt the violence. President Trump had warned that ongoing hostilities could jeopardize trade negotiations with both nations, but his remarks have so far failed to curb the fighting.
Rubio’s statement shows Washington’s growing concern over the regional instability and its potential to disrupt ASEAN unity. “The United States stands ready to support dialogue and mediation to ensure a peaceful resolution,” Rubio said in a press briefing. “We urge both Thailand and Cambodia to prioritize diplomacy and avoid further escalation.”

The meeting in Malaysia is seen as a pivotal opportunity to broker a truce and address the root causes of the dispute. Observers hope that the ASEAN-led initiative, backed by international support, will pave the way for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
