Man with Mental Illness Apprehended for Allegedly Stealing Doctor’s Bag at Phuket Hospital

Phuket —

A 40-year-old Thai man was arrested by Phuket City Police on Tuesday (July 15th) for stealing a doctor’s shoulder bag from Vachira Phuket Hospital. The incident took place around 3:15 PM in an outpatient examination room on the hospital’s third floor.

The suspect reportedly took the bag and fled the hospital. Police were dispatched immediately to locate the perpetrator. At approximately 8:30 PM the same day, patrol officers located and apprehended the suspect—identified only as Mr. Bunruen—while he was walking along Wichit Songkram Road.

Preliminary questioning revealed signs of psychiatric illness, with the suspect speaking incoherently and unable to provide clear information. After his arrest, police recovered the stolen bag and returned it to the victim, who later met with investigators.

Notably, the doctor chose not to press charges, citing compassion due to the suspect’s mental health condition. In response, police coordinated with relevant welfare agencies to ensure Mr. Bunruen would be transferred to a medical facility for proper psychiatric care and treatment.
