Man Arrested at Phuket Checkpoint with Firearm

Phuket —

A security force stationed at the Tha Chatchai checkpoint made an arrest during a routine inspection, reinforcing ongoing efforts to maintain safety and order on the island.

Officers at the Phuket Checkpoint told the Phuket Express that this week they have been conducting stringent vehicle inspections daily between 8:00 a.m. and midnight. The goal: identify and intercept individuals or vehicles suspected of illegal activity, particularly those carrying firearms or contraband.

During the inspection, authorities flagged a vehicle driven by a man traveling from Bangkok to Phuket. Upon searching the car, officers found a 9mm CZ-brand pistol, a matching magazine, and 35 rounds of ammunition concealed inside.

The suspect claimed he brought the weapon for personal protection while visiting his girlfriend in Phuket. However, law enforcement officials remain skeptical of his motives and are continuing their investigation.

The man was arrested on multiple counts, including:

  • Possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition
  • Carrying a firearm in public without legal authorization

He has been transferred to the Tha Chatchai Police Station for formal interrogation and legal proceedings.

Tha Chatchai checkpoint, located in Mai Khao, Thalang, serves as the only land entry into Phuket. Officials stated that such operations are vital for screening potential threats and preventing illegal weapons from entering the province.

Authorities urge the public to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activity. Enhanced patrols and checkpoints will remain in place to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
