Green Sea Turtle Rescued and Rehabilitated in Cherng Talay

Phuket –

A juvenile green sea turtle was successfully rescued and transferred for rehabilitation after being found stranded along the shore of Surin Beach in Thalang . The rescue operation was led by the Upper Andaman Coastal Marine Resources Research Center (CMDEC), following a tip-off from local beach security personnel.

The CMDEC told the Phuket Express that the turtle, identified as Chelonia mydas, was discovered in a weakened state, showing signs of dehydration and marine stress. Its carapace measured 48 centimeters in width and 50 centimeters in length, with an estimated weight of 12.7 kilograms. Though its overall body condition was deemed moderately poor (Body Condition Score 2/5), the turtle was alive but injured—bearing abrasions on its head and deep scratches across its shell. Barnacles were also found attached to its skin, further indicating an extended period of distress at sea.

Veterinarians conducted an on-site examination and provided preliminary treatment before transferring the turtle to the Siritharn Rare Marine Animal Rescue Center. The facility is now overseeing its recovery with hopes of eventual release once the turtle regains strength.
