Phuket—
In a proactive move showing Thailand’s commitment to disaster readiness, officials in Phuket participated in a nationwide virtual meeting to enhance preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Interior, brought together provincial leaders and national disaster response teams following recent seismic activity in Japan and the Nicobar Islands, India.
Mr. Adul Chuthong, Deputy Governor of Phuket, chaired the local session at the province’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, while Deputy Interior Minister Ms. Teerarat Samretwanich led the national briefing remotely from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) headquarters.

Reports presented during the meeting indicated that both seismic events—measuring approximately 5.0 on the Richter scale—have no immediate impact on Thailand and are unlikely to trigger tsunamis in the region. Nonetheless, officials brought up the importance of remaining alert and prepared.
The DDPM reaffirmed the functionality and coverage of early warning systems along Thailand’s vulnerable coastlines and stressed ongoing commitment to routine emergency drills. Citizens were reminded to stay informed through trusted media sources and avoid unnecessary panic.
Closing the session, Deputy Minister Teerarat shared a guiding sentiment for public awareness: “Be aware, but not alarmed.” It’s a message echoing the government’s approach—balancing caution with calm, and equipping communities with the knowledge and readiness they need to stay safe.
