Heavy Rain Warning Issued for 49 Thai Provinces, Including Bangkok, with 70 Percent Chance of Intense Downpours

Thailand-

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an urgent warning for heavy rainfall across 49 provinces in Thailand, including Bangkok, effective today, July 3rd, 2025. Approximately 70% of these areas are expected to experience intense downpours, raising concerns about flash floods, water surges, and landslides, particularly in low-lying and hilly regions. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential hazards.

The affected provinces span multiple regions:

– **Northern Region**: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet
– **Northeastern Region**: Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani

– **Central Region**: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Lopburi, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi

– **Eastern Region**: Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat
– **Southern Region (East Coast)**: Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan
– **Bangkok and Vicinity**: Bangkok and surrounding provinces are also at risk, with a 70% chance of heavy rain.

The TMD attributes the severe weather to a moderate southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system near northern Vietnam. These conditions are expected to persist, with some areas experiencing very heavy rainfall. Coastal areas, particularly along the Andaman Sea, may face waves up to 1-2 meters, with higher waves in stormy zones.

Authorities advise residents in vulnerable areas, especially near hillsides and waterways, to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential evacuations. Bangkok’s Drainage and Sewerage Department is on high alert, focusing on clearing drainage systems to mitigate flooding in key areas, though eight identified flood-prone zones in the capital remain a concern.
