Phuket Sees Over 6,600 Registered HIV Cases

Phuket

Health authorities in Phuket have reported a total of 6,622 registered HIV cases as of the second quarter of 2025, with 244 new infections during the period. Of those diagnosed, 5,699 are currently receiving antiretroviral therapy, marking an 86% treatment rate—slightly below the national target of 95%.

Muang district remains the most affected area in terms of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), according to Ms. Krittaya Charoensuk, a public health academic who presented the latest data. The report also highlights persistent challenges in public attitudes and service delivery within healthcare settings.

A recent national survey found that 65.7% of healthcare personnel expressed concerns about the risk of contracting HIV from patients, while 50.3% held negative views about HIV-positive individuals having children. Additionally, 21.2% had witnessed discriminatory behaviors in healthcare environments over the past year, and 25.1% admitted to being reluctant to serve key populations at higher risk of HIV, such as men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, sex workers, and people who inject drugs.

Between 2020 and 2022, six formal complaints were filed regarding HIV-related rights violations. Five cases have been resolved, and one remains under review.

While the United States continues clinical trials of a long-acting HIV vaccine — offering protection for up to six months with a single injection — the high cost poses a significant barrier. In contrast, Thailand has made strides in prevention by offering free daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) through the National Health Security Office (NHSO). This medication reduces the risk of HIV infection by approximately 80% when taken consistently.

Mr. Polawat Rojboonrit, a public prosecutor currently assigned to the Phuket Provincial Office of the Attorney General, stressed the importance of clear education and effective mediation processes between healthcare providers and HIV-positive individuals. He called for the establishment of stronger rights protection mechanisms to counter systemic discrimination within the public health system.
