PRESS RELEASE:
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has expressed disappointment over the leak of a private phone conversation with a Cambodian leader, calling it a breach of trust that could undermine diplomatic progress on border issues. The conversation, intended to ease tensions and propose joint steps toward peace, was made public without authorization and followed by unexpected demands from the Cambodian side, escalating the situation.
According to the Prime Minister, the call was meant to clarify a misunderstanding involving comments made by Thailand’s Second Army Region Commander and to propose a simultaneous opening of border checkpoints as a goodwill gesture. The Cambodian leader reportedly rejected the proposal and later issued a public ultimatum on social media, demanding that Thailand act first or face a complete closure of its border. The Thai Premier viewed the ultimatum as inconsistent with the tone of their private exchange.
Paetongtarn expressed concern that the Cambodian leader’s decision to go public may have been motivated by domestic political pressure. The leak has raised questions about whether private diplomatic channels can remain open under such conditions. The Prime Minister stated that her communication with the Cambodian leader was sincere and guided by a commitment to peace, national interest, and constructive engagement.
Despite the breach, the Prime Minister reaffirmed her priority of protecting Thailand’s sovereignty while avoiding unnecessary conflict. She said that any future steps would be taken in full coordination with the Thai military and national security authorities, as had been done in this case. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, she maintained that her government would continue to work towards resolving border issues peacefully and in the best interests of the Thai people.
