A Russian DJ known for his electrifying performances at Thailand’s famed island parties has been arrested for drug trafficking following a dramatic police sting operation.

Authorities launched an investigation after receiving intelligence that the suspect, identified as Mr. Atoian, 37, was selling illicit substances to tourists via encrypted messaging apps, including WhatsApp and Telegram. Atoian, a well-known DJ in Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, allegedly operated an automated drug distribution system, utilizing advanced digital platforms commonly associated with organized crime networks.

Police set up a controlled purchase using an undercover agent posing as a customer. Communication with Atoian was established via WhatsApp, where the suspect, using the alias “DJ Vigen,” arranged the sale of cocaine and ketamine. Officers documented the transaction, preparing marked currency for the exchange at Hua Thian Pier, a popular docking point in Koh Phangan.

As he arrived at the rendezvous point with the illicit substances, officers moved in for the arrest. Upon realizing the sting, the DJ attempted to flee on a motorcycle, leading to a brief pursuit. Cornered in a dead-end street, Atoian abandoned his vehicle, removed his helmet, and threw the drugs into the sea in a last-ditch effort to destroy evidence. However, officers swiftly recovered the plastic bags containing 2.20 grams of cocaine, 1.12 grams of MDMA, and 2.04 grams of ketamine, alongside other confiscated items, including an electronic cigarette, marked banknotes worth 13,000 baht, and two mobile phones.

Under interrogation, Mr. Atoian confessed to moonlighting as a drug dealer, targeting partygoers at various events while maintaining his career as a DJ. Further investigations revealed that he had a prior criminal record—previously arrested on July 5, 2024, for reckless driving resulting in serious injury and property damage.
