Thai, Cambodian Defense Ministers Hold First Talks to Ease Border Tensions

PRESS RELEASE:

The Thai government has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing armed conflict during tense border negotiations with Cambodia.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai held direct talks with Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Gen. Tea Seiha on June 5th. The discussion marked their first personal meeting and aimed to de-escalate tensions and avoid violence following recent incidents near the border.

Minister Phumtham emphasized that Thailand does not wish for war and proposed that both sides return to previously agreed positions near the Trimuk Pavilion, about 150–200 meters from the current standoff site. He reiterated that Thailand does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in such disputes, as declared since 1960.

e importance of keeping discussions focused on the immediate conflict zone. Cambodia did not formally agree to the Thai proposal but acknowledged its merit and pledged to forward it to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Senate President Hun Sen for review.

Phumtham said the upcoming Thai-Cambodian Joint Border Committee (JBC) meeting, scheduled for June 14th, will proceed as planned. He recommended that JBC representatives visit the disputed area if talks stall. Meanwhile, internal Thai security councils and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are reviewing the situation and forming advisory strategies.

Addressing criticism over photos from the border visit, Phumtham rejected claims that diplomacy compromises dignity. He warned that provocations calling for war only hinder progress. While Thailand is prepared if necessary, he stressed that war never benefits either side and harms soldiers and civilians first.
