Following the recent clash in the Chong Bok area on 28 May 2025, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to resolve the issue through existing bilateral mechanisms.
These include the Joint Border Commission (JBC), the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC), and the Regional Border Committee (RBC), reaffirming the strong relations between the two countries. This agreement followed discussions between the Army Commanders of both sides on 29 May 2025.
While Cambodia has expressed an intention to involve the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Thailand reiterates that it has not recognized the ICJ’s jurisdiction since 1960. Both nations already have established mechanisms in place, and it has been agreed from the outset to use these channels to address such matters. The priority now is for both parties to remain focused on resolving the specific incident without broadening the issue, which could lead to unnecessary complications.
Thailand emphasizes that it does not wish to see any losses on either side. Over the past 26 years, the JBC has made significant progress on key projects such as the Thailand-Cambodia Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian–Stung Bot) and the new border bridge at Ban Pak Kard in Chanthaburi Province.
Thailand remains ready to reconvene the JBC meeting on 14 June 2025 and hopes Cambodia will join in the spirit of peace, stability, and mutual respect.
