Police Arrest Reckless Youths Over Public Gunfire at Beach in Cherng Talay

Phuket authorities have apprehended three young men following a widely shared video showing reckless firearm use at Surin Beach, raising serious concerns about public safety and the island’s tourism reputation.

The footage, which sparked outrage online this week, depicted a group of individuals firing weapons indiscriminately in a public area. Social media users voiced their alarm, questioning the deteriorating security in Phuket.

The Cherng Talay Police told the Phuket Express that they identified the crime scene as Surin Beach in Cherng Thalay, Thalang. Police tracked down the suspects and seized three firearms along with multiple rounds of ammunition.

The arrested individuals include:

  • Siwakorn, 24: Charged with recklessly causing an explosion that posed danger to others and property.
  • Arthit, 22: Charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, carrying a weapon in public without authorization, and firing a gun without justification.
  • Prachya, 18: Facing similar charges as Arthit for illegal firearm possession and reckless shooting in a populated area.

Local residents expressed relief over the arrests but stressed the need for stricter enforcement to prevent such incidents from recurring. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining order and ensuring safety in Phuket, a top international tourist destination.
