Phuket police have intensified their investigation into a Chinese-funded luxury car rental operation following the arrest of suspects involved in illicit business dealings across the province.
The business allegedly acquired high-end vehicles with funds of unclear origin and marketed them directly to international clients through social media channels, bypassing local rental service providers.
The crackdown stems from a previous investigation into Chinese nationals engaged in nominee-based businesses, including restaurants, international schools, hotels, and luxury villas—amounting to over 1 billion baht in investments. Authorities discovered that individuals linked to these enterprises were also involved in the luxury car rental trade, prompting further scrutiny.
Investigators have compiled evidence against seven individuals, leading to arrest warrants issued by the court. So far, authorities have detained two suspects, while four others have reportedly fled the country. Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the remaining fugitives.
Local rental service providers have voiced concerns about the unfair competition posed by businesses operating under nominee arrangements. Officials stress that such practices undermine legitimate operators and economic stability, reaffirming their commitment to enforcing regulations and ensuring transparency in the industry.
