Thailand Braces for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Until Early June

BANGKOK, May 19th, 2025 – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) announced on Sunday that Thailand is set to experience a surge in rainfall and thunderstorms, with heavy downpours expected in several regions until early June. The forecast comes as the country transitions into its annual rainy season, driven by the southwest monsoon, which typically brings precipitation from May to October.

According to the TMD, the increased rainfall is attributed to a strengthening monsoon trough across the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, coupled with low-pressure systems that could intensify weather patterns. Areas in the northern, northeastern, central, and southern regions, including Bangkok, are likely to see frequent showers, with some provinces at risk of flash flooding and landslides due to heavy rain. The department urged residents, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas, to stay vigilant and monitor weather updates.

This forecast aligns with recent weather trends observed across Southeast Asia, where monsoon activity has been amplified by climatic factors. In a statement posted on its website, the TMD noted that accumulated rainfall in May 2025 has already exceeded average levels in some provinces, raising concerns about potential impacts on agriculture and infrastructure. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has been placed on alert, with local authorities preparing to distribute aid and evacuate residents if necessary.
Residents are advised to secure property, avoid flood-prone areas, and keep emergency supplies on hand. The TMD will continue to provide daily updates and issue warnings as needed through its website and local media channels.
