Phuket –
Phuket authorities have apprehended a French national for illegally working as a tour guide, with further investigations now targeting the tour company responsible. The operation was carried out at Yamu Pier in Pa Khlok, Thalang.
The Phuket Tourist Police told the Phuket Express that the action followed multiple complaints and video evidence showing a foreigner conducting guided tours without proper authorization. This week officials conducted surveillance at the pier, a departure point for tour boats heading to Naka Yai, Naka Noi, and Rang islands. They observed a foreign individual aboard a speedboat, assisting tourists without a licensed Thai guide present.
Upon investigation, the man was identified only as Mr. Gauthier, a French national working for a tour company. Further checks confirmed that he was unlawfully employed in Thailand.
The suspect was escorted to the Phuket Tourist Police Station, where authorities pressed charges on him over working without a permit and acting as a tour guide without proper licensing.
Further investigations revealed that the tour company, officially registered as a motorbike service company, failed to provide licensed tour guides or insurance coverage for tourists. The company now faces penalties under the Tourism Business and Guide Act which can lead to a fine of up to 500,000 THB for not assigning a licensed guide and a fine of up to 500,000 THB for failing to provide travel insurance.
Authorities confirmed that the Tourism Business and Guide Registration Office would impose administrative penalties, including suspension of the company’s license.
