Phuket –
The Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) launched a large-scale operation targeting the illegal cigarette trade in Phuket, uncovering connections to influential figures in the area. The operation resulted in multiple raids and seizures.
On Sunday (April 20th) a force of over 50 officers, including administrative personnel and territorial defense volunteers, conducted simultaneous raids at four key locations across Ratsada and Talat Yai.
The operation was prompted by public reports indicating large-scale smuggling and distribution of illegal cigarettes. Investigations revealed an organized network using tour boats to bring contraband into Thailand. The illegal products were then distributed through various vendors with additional logistical support from an undisclosed private company.
Authorities also uncovered a widespread online sales network for illegal cigarettes. Some physical retail locations had been modified with hidden compartments to evade detection during inspections.
The raids resulted in the seizure of large quantities of contraband cigarettes, with an estimated financial impact on the government exceeding 4 million baht. Officers arrested three suspects on charges related to violations of the Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017), including:
- Possessing untaxed or incompletely taxed goods
- Selling or holding for sale untaxed goods
- Importing or transporting items not cleared through customs
- Concealing, distributing, or receiving contraband linked to offenses under Sections 242 and 246 of the Customs Act
Citizens are urged to report any illegal activities or public safety concerns to the Damrongdhama Center at the district, provincial, or national level via hotline 1567, available 24/7.
