Phuket Orders Emergency Preparedness for Landslides and Flash Floods

The Phuket Governor Sophon Suwanrat has directed all relevant agencies to heighten disaster preparedness measures. The urgent directive is part of comprehensive readiness to help look for potential landslides and flash floods between April 16th to April 18th, as southeastern winds continue to drive torrential downpours. Some areas in Phuket are expected to receive over 100 mm. of accumulated rainfall.

The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued an urgent warning to residents across 25 provinces in Thailand, urging them to prepare for potential flash floods and mudslides due to heavy rainfall from widespread thunderstorms.The alert, effective from April 15 to 17, covers regions including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, Prachinburi, and Phuket.

The governor’s directive outlines five key measures aimed at safeguarding residents and minimizing flood-related risks including monitoring of high-risk areas, immediate drainage operations, watershed surveillance and evacuation procedures, and rapid incident reporting.

Governor Sophon has called on all public and private sectors to remain alert and work together to safeguard lives and property. Authorities assure that manpower, machinery, and emergency response systems are in full operational readiness to address potential weather-related crises.
