Phuket –
Phuket wildlife officials, working with law enforcement agencies, executed a search warrant on a rental home after receiving reports that an orangutan was being kept illegally in the residence.
The Phuket wildlife officials told the Phuket Express that the investigation began after reports surfaced that an orangutan had been sighted in the property, located in a housing estate in Koh Kaew. Authorities moved fast, obtaining a search warrant to confirm the presence of the protected primate.
Upon inspection, officials found no trace of the orangutan at the location. However, the tenant of the property admitted that a Chinese friend had temporarily brought the animal to the home. According to the tenant, the orangutan had already been relocated before the authorities arrived.
Despite the absence of the animal, officials recorded the details of the case and vowed to continue their investigation in pursuit of those responsible. Wildlife protection laws in Thailand strictly prohibit private ownership of endangered species, including orangutans, which are often victims of illegal wildlife trafficking.
Authorities are working to determine the whereabouts of the orangutan and ensure its safety, while also identifying any individuals involved in the unlawful possession of the primate. Further action may be taken as investigations unfold.
