– A 65-year-old Korean man reported to the Thalang Police on January 25th, after discovering his luggage was unusually heavy, leading to the discovery of five kilograms of an illegal substance at a hotel in Thalang, Phuket.
The incident came to light when the Korean national, who was staying at a local hotel, contacted the Korean Consulate about the suspicious weight of his luggage. At approximately 11:00 P.M., police, along with officers from the Korean Consulate, responded to the hotel.
Upon inspection, the authorities found two paper bags within the luggage containing five kilograms of what was described as ‘white powder’. The Thalang Police have confirmed that this substance is an illegal drug, commonly known in Thailand as heroin.
The Korean man explained that he had received the luggage from an unidentified foreigner at the hotel earlier that day. He intended to travel to France via Phuket International Airport but became alarmed when he noticed the unexpected weight of his luggage, suspecting it might contain illegal items.
Police have not yet disclosed whether the Korean man provided any further details about the circumstances under which he accepted the luggage from the foreigner. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement looking into the origins of the drugs and the network behind this smuggling attempt.
This incident underscores the vigilance required at international travel hubs and the complexities involved in international drug trafficking. The Phuket Express will continue to follow this story as more details emerge.
