Phang Nga —
On January 26th, 2025, Rittikorn Nunloy, the Head of Similan Islands National Park, reported the sighting of over 100 false killer whales near Bangu Island in Phang Nga.
The pod was observed on the afternoon of January 24th by park rangers patrolling the area for scuba diving activities. The whales were seen near and alongside the patrol boat, feeding on small fish.
This rare sighting highlights the rich marine biodiversity of the Similan Islands. False killer whales, protected under Thailand’s Wildlife Conservation Act, are known for their black bodies, gray underbellies, and social nature, often forming pods of 10–60 or more.
Such encounters underscore the ecological importance of preserving this vibrant underwater habitat.
