Phuket-
In a dramatic maritime rescue off the coast of Phuket, 33 Chinese tourists, along with four Thai nationals, were saved after their catamaran capsized near Racha Yai Island. The incident occurred at approximately 12:47 PM local time, as reported by the Phuket Marine Office to the Phuket Express.
The catamaran was en route from Racha Yai Island to Coral Island when disaster struck. According to an unidentified boat manager, the ordeal began when a window on the starboard side of the vessel shattered, likely due to impact from a high wave. This breach allowed water to flood into the boat, causing it to tilt and eventually capsize within 20 minutes of the initial incident.
The group rescued included 33 Chinese tourists, one Thai tour guide, one intern student, and three crew members. All individuals on board were wearing life jackets, which undoubtedly played a crucial role in their survival. They were spotted floating in the water around the sinking vessel and were promptly rescued by nearby boats that responded to the emergency.
The exact cause of the glass breaking remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest it might have been due to the force of the waves or a collision with an unseen object in the water. The weather conditions at the time were reported to be rough, with high waves typical for the monsoon season, which could have contributed to the accident.
Rescue operations were swift, with local marine units, private boats, and nearby vessels all contributing to the effort. The rescued individuals were all reported to be safe, though some were treated for minor injuries and shock upon reaching land.
The Phuket Marine Office is now reviewing safety protocols for tourist boats in the area, aiming to prevent future incidents.
