Thailand to Remember the 20th Year after Losses from Tsunami

PRESS RELEASE:

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, in collaboration with other private and public partners, will host a commemorative event on the 20th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami from 26 to 27 December 2024 in Phang Nga Province to honor the victims and those affected by the disaster. The occasion will also showcase Thailand’s progress on disaster management and promote awareness and preparedness for future disasters.

The two-day event will be held in various locations at Ban Nam Khem Community in Phang Nga, one of Thailand’s worst-affected areas in the 2004 tsunami. On 26 December, there will be seminars and an exhibition on disaster preparedness and resilience measures at the Khao Lak Marriott Beach Resort & Spa. On the 27th, local residents and mourners from various nations will hold candlelight vigils all along the beach and a commemorative “walk-run” at the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park.

The preceding is a press release from the Thai Government PR Department.
