A Dutch motorbike rider was fined after he was caught on a video while doing wheelies on Samui Island in Surat Thani.
A video clip went viral in a local social media group on Saturday (December 21st). A foreign rider was seen in the clip appearing to be doing wheelies near the Big Buddha Temple on the Bangrak – Cherng Mon Road in Bophut. Netizens expressed concern for the actions saying they could cause serious injury to the rider and innocent people around him if there was an accident and asked for police to take action.
The Bophut Police Chief Colonel Denduang Thongsuk told the Phuket Express that they tracked down the rider who was later identified only as a 28 year-old male Netherland national. He was taken to the Bophut Police Station.
He admitted to police that the rider in the video clip was him doing wheelies on Friday night (December 20th). He told police that he did not know that he was breaking Thailand traffic law and that such stunts were illegal. He apologized to police and promised that he will not do that again. He added that he visited Thailand to learn Muay Thai and will return to his country next month.
The Dutch man is regardless facing charges of reckless riding with the fine of 1,000 Baht and using a motorbike with a modified part (exhausted pipe) with a fine of 2,000 Baht. His name was not released by police.
