Mental Health Support Offered in Flood-Affected South

PRESS RELEASE:

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reports ongoing flooding in Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat, impacting 22 districts, 98 subdistricts, and 526 villages, with over 63,000 households affected. While rainfall has decreased in some areas, heavy rain continues in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, prolonging the crisis.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai, overseeing the Center for Flood and Storm Disaster Assistance, has coordinated 24-hour relief operations. Teams of military, police, medical personnel, and civilian staff are distributing supplies, maintaining evacuation shelters, deploying water pumps, and assisting with cleanup efforts in areas where floodwaters have receded.

To address mental health concerns, the Ministry of Public Health, led by Minister Somsak Thepsutin, has deployed five “Friendship Vehicles Battling Floods” to provide psychological support in affected areas. Equipped for telemedicine consultations, stress assessments, and counseling, these vehicles deliver critical mental health services to those experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression. Multidisciplinary teams of psychologists, nurses, and social workers are offering care in the hardest-hit regions and referring severe cases to medical facilities.

Flooding across 11 southern provinces has impacted more than 780,000 households, with the worst conditions persisting in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Chumphon, and Ranong. Rainfall is expected to continue until December 22, according to the Thai Meteorological Department, as relief operations work to stabilize the situation and aid affected communities.
