PRESS RELEASE:
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra visited Nakhon Si Thammarat on December 17 to assess the ongoing flood crisis in the South, where severe flooding continues to affect many communities.
During her visit, she met with the Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), provincial governors, and relevant agencies to coordinate relief efforts and implement urgent measures for affected areas. Despite government assistance, including 9,000 baht in financial aid per household, the situation remains critical and requires immediate action.
The prime minister instructed authorities to prioritize providing essential relief supplies, including food, water, medicines, and access to evacuation centers, to stabilize living conditions in the hardest-hit areas. She also directed agencies to expedite repairs to damaged infrastructure, such as roads, electricity, and water systems, ensuring essential services resume as quickly as possible. Financial aid distribution is ongoing, with preparations being made to address potential new flooding.
Under the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act, personnel and resources from local and central authorities, including the military, have been mobilized to manage the crisis. Local agencies have been tasked with monitoring high-risk areas, issuing timely warnings, and enforcing safety measures at natural tourist destinations to safeguard visitors.
The prime minister expressed her gratitude to government agencies, the military, police, private sector partners, volunteers, and foundations for their swift response. She stressed the need to prioritize safety while continuing to deliver comprehensive support to affected residents.
