PRESS RELEASE:
Flooding continues to affect Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, disrupting life across 27 districts, 137 sub-districts, 814 villages, and more than 43,000 households, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). Flash floods and forest runoff warnings were issued via SMS on December 14, urging residents in vulnerable areas to relocate belongings and evacuate vulnerable groups to safer locations.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in southern provinces through December 16 due to a strong northeasterly monsoon and a low-pressure system. Areas such as Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung are at risk of flash floods and landslides, especially near hillsides, riverbanks, and low-lying areas. The Gulf of Thailand is experiencing strong winds and waves of up to three meters, with small boats advised to stay ashore.
The Office of the National Water Resources has also issued alerts for high tides and possible saltwater intrusion along the Chao Phraya, Tha Chin, and Mae Klong rivers. Water quality for agriculture and consumption may be impacted in low-lying areas outside permanent flood barriers in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and nearby provinces. Large reservoirs, including Bang Lang in Yala, and medium-sized reservoirs in Ranong, Krabi, and Phatthalung are nearing capacity, prompting close monitoring by authorities.
Relief efforts are underway, with over 1,600 personnel and 1,000 equipment units deployed to assist affected communities. Food and supplies are being distributed, and the Irrigation Department has dispatched water pumps, pushers, and dredging equipment to improve drainage. Healthcare facilities in flooded areas remain operational, supported by mental health teams assisting those impacted. Financial aid for over 300,000 households in 57 provinces has been nearly completed, with further payments planned for December 17 in newly affected areas. Authorities are monitoring geohazard zones across 10 southern provinces as they continue to assess damage and coordinate relief operations.
