Heavy Rain in Koh Phangan Causes Landslide and Power Outage Ahead of Full Moon Party

Koh Phangan —

On the night of December 14th, 2024, heavy rainfall since December 12th triggered a landslide on Koh Phangan, with a massive boulder sliding down a mountainside and crushing high-voltage power poles along the Ban Tai-Haad Thong Nai Pan road. The incident caused widespread power outages and blocked the road entirely.

Ban Tai Mayor Trirong Jaikwang, in coordination with the Provincial Electricity Authority, dispatched teams with excavators and repair vehicles to clear the road and restore power despite continuous rain.

The landslide is believed to have been caused by saturated soil and weakened ground conditions, according to Surat Thani local media.

Electricity in Thong Nai Pan is expected to be restored by December 15th. Meanwhile, the Haad Rin Business Association has confirmed that the Full Moon Party will proceed as planned on December 15th, 2024.

Read about the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operations Center has issued an urgent warning for heavy rainfall in five southern provinces.

The continuing rains caused severe flooding in Chumphon province and disrupted road and rail travel, with authorities closing both southbound and northbound lanes of Asia Highway 41.
