PRESS RELEASE:
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered a full mobilization of resources to support Southern Thailand as the region braces for a second wave of heavy rainfall from December 3 to 5. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has deployed over 5,500 personnel and more than 6,400 equipment units, including boats and trucks, to assist affected residents.
Flooding has subsided in four provinces—Chumphon, Surat Thani, Trang, and Satun—but six others, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, remain inundated. The number of affected households has decreased from 664,000 to 303,000, but challenges persist in areas with high floodwaters. Nearly 41,000 residents are currently housed in 489 evacuation centers, while mobile kitchens provide meals to those unable to relocate.
According to the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operations Center’s deputy spokesperson, Sasikarn Watthanachan, healthcare services are prioritizing vulnerable populations, including bedridden patients, the elderly, and those with critical conditions such as pregnancy or kidney disease. Officials have identified nearly 300 high-priority cases, and some patients have been transferred from flood-prone hospitals to safer facilities.
Relief measures include streamlined financial aid distribution and expedited damage assessments for agriculture, fisheries, and livestock losses. The government is currently working to meet the immediate needs of flood-affected communities while advancing efforts to restore normalcy and support long-term recovery.
