Myanmar Man Drowns after Collecting Coins During Loy Krathong in Phuket

A Myanmar man drowned after he was trying to collect coins during Loy Krathong at a festival in Sri Soonthorn on Saturday early in the morning (November 16th).

The Thalang Police were notified of the incident at 2:50 A.M. at the Bang Maruan Public Park where the annual Loy Krathong Festival was taking place. Rescue divers arrived at the scene to a find a pair of shoes near the huge lagoon inside the public park.

They took about ten minutes to find the body of Mr. Aye Toe, 35, a Myanmar national, four meters below the water surface. His body was pulled up from the water by the rescue and recovery teams. Witnesses told police that they saw Mr. Aye walking into the lagoon to try to find some coins in Krathongs.

During Loy Krathong, many people put money in their krathongs that they float into bodies of water, as part of making merit and for good luck. Unsurprisingly, many people also try to collect the money.

Witnesses saw a pair of shoes but no one was seen in the lagoon after that.
