Thailand Prepares for Potential Flooding in Southern Provinces

PRESS RELEASE:

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) led by Anutin Charnvirakul, Minister of Interior and Deputy Prime Minister has announced preparations for potential flooding in southern Thailand due to expected heavy rainfall from the northeastern monsoon and cold air masses from China. These weather conditions elevate the risk of flash floods, forest runoff, and river overflows, particularly in the southern provinces.

The DDPM has activated readiness measures in 14 southern provinces, as well as in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Local agencies are advised to closely monitor weather patterns, pre-position equipment in high-risk areas, and prepare evacuation centers. Tourist sites such as waterfalls, caves, and beaches will close temporarily during hazardous conditions, while coastal businesses and maritime operators are advised to halt operations during strong winds and high waves.

Public communication efforts are in place to provide continuous updates on weather conditions and safety guidelines, with immediate alerts if evacuations are required. In the event of a disaster, the DDPM will mobilize resources to provide essential supplies and support for affected communities. Evacuations will be conducted as needed, ensuring residents’ safety until conditions stabilize.

Regional disaster prevention centers in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Songkhla, and Phuket have been instructed to ensure equipment and personnel are ready for deployment. Additionally, a KA-32 disaster prevention helicopter stationed in Surat Thani, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Army, will support flood response operations.

The DDPM will provide updates through its official Facebook page, X account, the “Thai Disaster Alert” app, and the 24-hour hotline at 1784.
