Phuket Police Crack Down on Illegal Tour Guides Ahead of the Upcoming High Season

Phuket —

On October 12th, 2024, Phuket tourist police launched a major crackdown on illegal activities ahead of the 2024 tourist high season in November and December, focusing particularly on unlicensed foreign tour guides and other legal offenses affecting the tourism industry.

The operation is part of a nationwide effort targeting ten categories of crimes, with an emphasis on curbing illegal foreign tour guides, which is a protected Thai occupation that even work permits and visas are unavailable for.
Phuket local media revealed that the Phuket police and Immigration in a joint operation had been inspecting key tourist hotspots, where they encountered a suspicious foreign individual guiding Chinese tourists without proper legal authorization.

According to the Phuket police, relevant authorities arrested a 37-year-old Chinese national, identified only as Mr. Liu, in the Mueang District. Mr. Liu was charged with working without a work permit and operating as a tour guide without a valid license.

Initially, authorities escorted Mr. Liu to the Phuket police station for further legal proceedings.
