Krabi –
A dugong was found dead on the Thap Kaek Beach in Mueang Krabi.
The Department of Coastal Resources (DMCR) told the Phuket Express that on Monday (October 7th ) they were notified from a park ranger from the Hat Noppharat Thara Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park of the incident. A dugong was found dead on the Thap Kaek Beach in Nong Talay.
The DMCR arrived at the scene to find the female adult dugong. She was 195 centimeters long. The dugong had also started to decompose and bite wounds from other dugongs were found on her back. No severe wounds from fishing equipment were found. The cause of death could not be initially identified.
The dead dugong was buried on the beach but some of its tissues were taken for further review in a local laboratory.
The Phuket Express notes that the dugong is one of Thailand’s Reserved Animals which is nearly extinct. Trang is many dugong’s home due to having lots of sea grass but now due to the climate crisis, sea grass in Trang has been decreased. The dugongs are now being evacuated to other provinces nearby in the Andaman Sea including Krabi, Phang Nga, and Phuket to find more sea grass.
