Phuket Vegetarian Festival Officially Begins after Go Teng Pole Raised

The Phuket Vegetarian festival has officially begun after the Go Teng Pole was raised on Wednesday (October 2nd).

The annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival dates were officially set which will be held for nine days from October 3rd to October 11th, 2024.

Also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, it is believed that abstinence from meat and stimulants will bring about good health and peace of mind to individuals and the community.

Now, for our Update:

The Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn and the Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat led the rise of the ‘Go Teng’ Pole ceremony at the Jui Tui Shrine. Joining them were many Thai and foreign vegetarians.

The Jui Tui Shrine is Phuket’s largest and oldest Chinese shrine. The shrine was established more than 199 years ago. The shrine is located on Soi Phu Thorn on the Ranong Road in Talat Nuea, Phuket Town. Other Shrines in Phuket also raised the ‘Go Teng’ Pole.

The Go Teng pole is the sign of the beginning of the vegetarian festival which is raised one day before the vegetarian festival. The ceremony is welcoming the Nine Emperor Gods.

Vegetarians believe that joining in the Go Teng Pole raising ceremony will bring good luck before they start their vegetarian fast for nine days from Thursday October 3rd to Friday October 11th , 2024.
