The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.
These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket and nearby provinces.
They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, September 2nd to Sunday September 8th, 2024.
1. Fishing is now banned at the Rawai Pier due to dugongs being found.
A dugong was first sighted in Rawai, south of Phuket.
2. The Phuket Big Buddha on the Nerk Kerd Mountain is temporarily closed for tourism.
The closure came after the Provincial Monk Leader issued an order on August 31st to stop any activity at the Phuket Big Buddha while an investigation was being continued.
3. A Phuket man won the first prize in the Thai national lottery, receiving a prize of 30 million Baht.

Mr. Jeerasak Saetan who is the head of a technician team at a car compary in Phuket filed a report to the Phuket City Police Station with his five sets of lottery tickets with the numbers of 199606.
4. A 28 year-old alleged British drug dealer wanted in his own country was arrested in Rawai.

Ben is a wanted drug suspect in England who according to relevant authorities has been sentenced to life imprisonment but had allegedly escaped to Thailand in 2022.
5. The Phuket Kwaeng Court has dismissed a prominent viral case involving a Swiss Expat allegedly assaulting a Thai doctor in front of a villa in Paklok, Thalang in February.
