Fishing Banned at Rawai Pier after Dugongs Found

Fishing is now banned at the Rawai Pier due to dugongs being found.

Our previous story:

A dugong was first sighted in Rawai, south of Phuket on Tuesday (August 20th).

Now for the update:

Mr. Wissanu Jangjai, the director of the Marine and Coastal Resources Office 10 told the Phuket Express that this week warning signs were placed at the pier. Fishing of any marine animals are being banned at the pier. The warning is to prevent activity that can disturb dugongs and their main food, seagrass.

Fishing boats are also being informed to be careful. If anyone sees injured dugong or other marine animals, please call the hotline 1362.

It has been reported that more than one dugong are now being found near the pier.
