Now for the update:
Karon Mayor Jadet Wachirasorn recently addressed concerns about unauthorized construction on Nark Kerd Hill, specifically related to the Phuket Big Buddha. According to local media reports, the caretaker responsible for the construction did not obtain the necessary legal documents or an official license for the project.
Key points from Mayor Jadet’s statement:
1. **Demolishing Order Issued:** Last year, authorities issued a demolishing order for the unauthorized structures being built on Nark Kerd Hill. Despite this order, construction has continued, prompting further action.
2. **Report Filed with Karon Police:** The situation escalated, and a report was filed with the Karon Police regarding the ongoing construction. Authorities are taking steps to address the issue.
3. **Protected Forest Area:** Nark Kerd Mountain is part of Thailand’s National Reserve Forest. The Forest Department has confirmed that this area is not permitted for construction.
4. **Phuket Big Buddha:** The iconic Phuket Big Buddha has been under construction for 22 years but remains unfinished. It is overseen by the Phra Phuttha Ming Mongkhon Sattha Foundation. It is an extremely popular tourist and religious attraction which may complicate efforts to enforce laws around construction permits.
